The David Hockney Foundation was established by the artist in 2008 with the goal of advancing appreciation and understanding of visual art and culture. The Foundation owns more than 8,000 works of art by David Hockney, from lithographs, etchings, screen prints, home made prints, photographic drawings, and multi-camera movies, to original templates for works of art transmitted by fax; from works from his earliest student days to an array of paintings and drawings from throughout his career. Cast Iron Coding was responsible for bringing to life an inspired design from Hilary Vlastelica at Surface Streets which envisioned a vast repository organized chronologically and artworks throughout Hockney's career put into the larger context of his life and the culture of the time, including direct quotations from the artist.

The page templates and image galleries are intentionally unpredictable and asymmetrical; the image and text placement does not fit neatly into a grid. This was a particular challenge from a coding and content entry standpoint, and a design choice not often seen on institutional sites, but it's so rewarding to see images and writing about art so evocative of the art itself.

This project was realized with October CMS, PHP, Javascript, and React, including custom content blocks for the complicated columnar layouts. NaomiRubin, Lead Frontend Developer at Cast Iron Coding As a Frontend Developer on this project I took on many small feature requests and bug fixes, as well as ownership of several custom content blocks used across the site.
